The closing bell today marked the end of the most recent Running with the Bulls Stock Market Game. Unlike last quarter’s competition, there was little movement in the top portfolios as our resident Jedi Master, “JediMindTricks”, dominated the competition. Jedi used the force wisely as he went all in on the best performing stock in the contest, NFLX, and did not falter from the top spot since he took it over on April 23 rd. “The Critic”, suffering at the fate of timing, chose the winning stock, but just two days too late and finished right behind the Jedi.
Similar to the last quarter, players that concentrated in a high Beta portfolio paid the price. LINTA (Beta of 2.57) and ANF (Beta of 1.52), two popular choices, can be found in high concentrations in the bottom portion of the leader board.
While the winner almost perfectly timed the best performing stock, it’s always interesting to look at how timing can affect the competition. For example, if Jedi would have started on 4/26 with his same portfolio, he would have finished in 16 th place, up 2.75% (compared to his actual 28.01%)! Even our last place finisher, “The A-Team” could have finished 20% better (-8% versus -28%) if he would have waited two weeks to join!
A few quick facts regarding the stocks/portfolios during the contest’s time period (4/15 to 5/28):
- 74 out of 93 portfolios managed to outperform the S&P 500 Index (-8.96%)…last quarter 36 managed this feat
- Best performing stocks (from 4/15): NFLX +28.0%, CMG +13.8%, DG +12.0%
- Worst performing stocks (from 4/15): ANF -28.1%, LINTA -21.3%, SHLD -19.2%
- Best performing industries (from 4/15): Discount Retail +7.2% (DG,DLTR,FDO) and Food-Confectionery +5.7% (HSY)
- Worst performing industries (from 4/15): Mail Order/Direct –21.3% (LINTA) and Clothing/Shoe -13.4% (ANF,GPS,LTD)
